Who Gets Migraines?

According to estimates, approximately 28 million people in the United States suffer from migraine.4 Women experience migraines at least three times more often than men do, possibly due to hormonal influences.4 And while migraines can occur in children, they generally first appear in the twenties or thirties.5

Studies have shown that the tendency to develop migraines can be inherited.3
For example, if one parent has migraine headaches, there is a 40 percent chance that the child will have migraine.3 If both parents have migraine, there is a 75 percent chance that their children will have migraine.3

Although experts disagree as to whether there is a specific migraine personality, many migraine sufferers have been described as perfectionists, high-strung, conscientious, orderly, analytical and critical.5
